According to the national intelligence director James Clapper, one of top threats that the United States is facing today are cyber-attacks by political and criminally motivated entities.

He recently delivered a speech in the annual assessment in congress where he said, “Cyber threats to US national and economic security are increasing in frequency, scale, sophistication and severity of impact,”

CyberThe national intelligence director added that attacks that are motivated by politics are growing and that foreign actors are exploring and developing access to various critical infrastructure

Although he said that, “These might be quickly exploited for disruption if an adversary’s intent became hostile,” he quickly eradicated any notion that the United States is vulnerable to attacks in the cyberspace , which may lead to various infrastructure complications in the future,

He quickly rebut that the US intelligence is anticipating an ongoing attack, which he said, will come in different waves and levels. Most of them however are likely to just fall under moderate to level. He stressed the fact however that the accumulation of attacks over time may have a cumulative cost on the National Security of the United States.

According to a report published by Clapper’s office, US’ bitter cold war rival is implementing new laws that authorize the organization of multiple cyber commands that can carry out attacks. Likewise, the report is considering other countries such as China, Iran as well as North Korea as primary threats to the US cyberspace. They also notified the Senate Armed Services Committee that the Russians remain the largest threat to the US and its interest and that such threat is greater as compared to that of the previous years.

The recently concluded year saw several high- profile attacks towards targets in the US. These included the social media accounts of the US military command, the infamous Sony Pictures incident that is the most famous, as well as the Las Vegas Sands Casino Corporation

Clapper issued a statement where he said, “The most pervasive threat to the US financial sector is from cyber criminals who were responsible for cyber intrusions in 2014 into JP Morgan, Anthem and other US companies,”

He also added, “In future we will probably see cyber operations that change or manipulate electronic information to compromise its integrity instead of simply deleting or disrupting access to it,”

Reuters’ sources claim that one of the entities responsible for placing the spyware in hard drives from manufacturers such as Western Digital, Seagate and Toshiba is NSA

Clapper also pointed that, “In the end, the cyber threat cannot be completely eliminated. Rather, we must be vigilant in our efforts to detect, manage and defend against it.”
